What Tor does

Tor routes your connection through three relays run by volunteers before it reaches the destination. The destination, the onion, sees only the third relay, not your machine. You see the page. No single relay sees both ends. That is the whole trick, and it is why the address has to be right: there is no search box, no "did you mean", and no way back except a new address.

What .onion actually is

A v3 .onion address is an encryption key pair, not a domain name. Nobody registers it with an authority; whoever holds the private key controls what the address serves. That has two consequences. First, an address keeps working as long as someone runs the key, and stops the day they stop. Second, a dead address can come back serving a different site, because over time a different key can take its place. That is how some retired onions end up on clones.

Why the full string matters

The 56 characters are the address. Not the first eight, not the "osiris" part. Vanity generation makes it cheap to own an address that starts with a familiar word and continues with noise. So a link that "starts with osiris" is not yet a link to Osiris. The whole string, compared character by character, is the only comparison that means anything. The six checks are documented here.

What a directory is

A directory is a clearnet page that copies the operator's signed address set into a form you can read on a normal browser and copy from. It is a cache, not an authority. The authority is the signed announcement, and the method for checking it is on the verify page. A good directory adds nothing it cannot stand behind: no uptime percentages, no "last checked" counters, no proxy button that routes your traffic through a stranger.

What you should be able to do after this page

Open Tor Browser, paste a 56-character address, wait for the circuit, and compare the address bar against a known-good copy. If you can do that, the dark web is just the web with a longer address.
